When I did this experiment on Feb. 1 the stimulus package included $400 million for Global Warming research. Now that number is up to $2.8 Billion. I think the money only goes to people who are trying to prove Global Warming however, not disprove it like my experiment did.
The identical thermometers represent the earth and the garbage bags represent the atmosphere. Both thermometers were at 41ºF at 3:00 which was 9º warmer than the air temperature which was at 32º.
At 3:30 pm they had both warmed even more, the bag with the car exhaust was 49º and the bag with air was 50º. At 4:00 pm the bag with exhaust went back down to 41º but the bag with air was still at 45º. I think the bag with regular air stayed warmer because air contains water vapor, which is the major source of the greenhouse effect in our atmosphere. Car exhaust doesn't have much water vapor and is not a great greenhouse gas.
I filled the bag with 100% car exhaust as an extreme example to show that it is not a major greenhouse gas. To actually show the amount of CO2 mankind puts into the atmosphere I would have only needed to put in 1 ml of car exhaust in to a 30 Gallon trash bag, which is just the very bottom of an eye dropper.
Of course if you are an alarmist you could conclude by this experiment that car exhaust could cause Global Cooling, and that the new hydrogen burning cars could really cause Global Warming because they emit water vapor.

I am highly supportive of this type of idea. I realize tongue in cheek, and that this isn't being represented as a valid scientific experiment, but it is still thought provoking.
I might have to do a green house experiment with my children, using calibrated thermometers, and a larger greenhouses. My guess is the we still won't be able to detect anything other than normal stochastic differences.
What do you mean not a valid scientific experiment?
It's probably more accurate than the billion dollar computer models.
As you know, I am certainly fed up with the pseudo-scientific quackery being done by James Hansen and crew.
However, you might have swapped thermometers, had multiple runs, calibrated, etc.
Your results would not have changed, obviously, since the heat sink of the atmosphere has a much stronger effect on the bags, even if you had used 100% CO2, your experiment would have showed the same results.
If the experiment were more rigorously conducted, it would have in fact been even more funny to me.
True, I'll have to do it a few more times.
I am also setting up a weather station at my house, one that measures atmospheric CO2. So now there will be 2 places in the world, where they measure CO2, Mauna_Loa and Minnesota.
How much you want to bet on day one, I discover the the atmospheric CO2 is lower here in the frozen tundra than it is on top of a volcano in Hawaii.
Another way we can all help control global warming is with these handy toilet wipes:

Wonderful, next they'll be getting rid of the miracle of indoor plumbing.
Hi, Out here on the west coast we have Dr. Bill Wattenberg. Dr. Bill broadcasts over KGO radio out of San Francisco on Sat and Sun nights from 10 pm to 1 am, he can be heard from Alaska all the way down to Baja California in the evening because of the skip signal at night. Dr. Bill is a nuclear physicist and engineer, he worked on the Apollo space mission and has an extensive resume.
Anyway the ad in the link was placed in the Washington Post on 25 Feb 2009 by Bill Wattenburg. It appeared on page A2 at the bottom left corner. Bill Wattenburg paid for this ad to send a direct message to the president that both he and Bob Brinker believe is extremely important. They have given the president their most constructive ideas and advice. Bob Brinker and Bill Wattenburg do not work for the natural gas industry.

BTW, you all can listen to Dr. Bill on the internet, just go to KGO.com , might be kind of late for you, or -early I guess, but you can go to the archives and listen at a reasonable time if you are so inclined.
Car exhaust contains water vapor:
Gasoline (CxHx) + O2 = CO2 + H2O
Brian,
Looks like that would be a large boon to the laundry detergent industry. Less global warming but more phosphates to take back out of our water.
1. ridiculous experiment
2. co2 is measured at many sites other than mauna loa
Hi, This certainly is an interesting experiment.
I have a couple of styrofoam beer coolers that I will try this with. Dry CO2 from my keg tapper should fix the water problem. The clear plastic is a great idea. It is almost transparent to thermal radiation where glass is not.
I will let you know how it turns out.
Regards,
Thank you soooooooooooooooooo much for the post, this is just the thing I needed today!!!
Love it
Sorry, aber das bezweifel ich ganz stark...

Das hätte ich nun gar nicht gedacht. Hast du dazu weitere Quellen? Gruß Wschbeckenunterschrank
Wow! what an idea ! What a concept ! Beautiful .. Amazing …
This article gives the light in which we can observe the reality. this is very nice one and gives indepth information. thanks for this nice article
