Record cold high temperatures possible today

I had to wear my down vest to softball last night, in JULY!

By ALEX EBERT, Star Tribune

A strong northerly wind is prompting the National Weather Service to call for a high of 64 in the metro area.

Chilly and blustery. That's the un-July-like forecast for today that is poised to push temperatures down to a record cold high for this date in the Twin Cities.

This cold weather could dampen spirits at Minneapolis' Aquatennial celebration, which begins today. Promoters have long promoted the 10-day festival as "The Best Days of Summer," but that could be a hard sell this time around.

Readings in the 50s and low 60s are sure to make things less festive for festivalgoers at today's tennis tournament and outdoor concert.

A strong northerly wind is prompting the National Weather Service to call for a high today of 64. If that proves out, that would be 2 degrees below the record cold high of 66 set in 1939.

"This [typically] is about our warmest time of the year," said Weather Service meteorologist Matt Friedlein. "It is very uncommon to have northern wind three days in a row this time of year."

Friedlein said that Thursday night's cloud cover kept the state from hitting record low temperatures.

As for tonight, look for lows in the 50s across the metro area.

The clouds and wind will stay through Saturday, forecasters predict, with a high in the 60s and a low of 50 at night. Things will heat up a bit Sunday and Monday, when forecasters say the high could reach 80.

Forecasters are also looking for a record low high today in St. Cloud. They are anticipating a high of just 62, 4 degrees lower than the 1977 record of 66.

St. Cloud set a record cold high Thursday of 66 degrees, breaking the previous record of 69 set in 1962 and 1906.

Summers and Falls in Minnesota have been great the last several years.

Nothing wrong with 60's and 50's... I love those temps. But if we get into the 40's that might seriously hurt the corn/soybeans.

I'm not really for global warming, Elmer, sorry. I like it cooler in Minnesota, especially in the summer.

Greenpeace is unimpressed.
Says Greenland is still warming and still talking about less sea ice.

If you ask me what we ought to be looking at is underground volcanic activity. Small changes in this would seem to me to make large changes in ocean temperatures just because of the amount of energy involved.

I was at the air show today and I was freezing
my wife and kids had to wear shorts. Weather.com
predicted we hit 70. I the global warming would
kick in soon so I don't have to dress like it's October
in July! Greenpeace fudges facts and bjorn lombergs "skeptical
environmentalist" illustrates this as he was a high
ranking officer there until he bailed. He said they only
care about $$$ not the environment and has been
threatened by those "peaceniks" ever since.

It snowed at my place (Olympic peninsula - WA) in mid May and I said that's enough of that! I bought a new lawn mower, weed whacker and chain saw with ridiculasly big engins and began mowing my lawn three times a week, weed whacking the pasture on Sundays and burning tree cuttings and other yard waste to the maximum (if I'm not worried about the house catching on fire the fire is not big enough) Then I built a Tiki bar with lots of little tiki god carvings and I light a tiki torch for each one every night. AND WE'RE HAVING THE BEST SUMMER SINCE 1969!!! So get busy and start generating more CO2 or you're never going to get warm.

Mike,

You could cover your lawn with asphalt to absorb more heat from the sun. I think that's more effective than producing CO2.

Dave,
Hey, some of us are retired and can't afford all that asphalt, so we just do what we can. Today I burned up 14 gallons of gas going over to look at my son's RANGE ROVER (14MPG). I am so proud of that boy. On the way home the wife and I passed up a fruit stand to stop at McDonalds because they contribute way more to global warming selling beef products than some organic veggie tent. I figure I've only got about twenty years left but if I can help raise the sea level buy 80 feet my grandkids will inherit property on a really nice island! PS. I did reroof my house in black 3tab last time but that was before global warming-just lucky.

Hey, I just thought I would let you know your template doesn't display correctly in Amaya. Cool site tho!

May I congratulate you on your exemplary work. You have won me over and gained a new subscriber. in comparison to many of the works on the web this is a rare find, I am delighted that I found your article. I shall be linking to this from all my sites.

I have a apple book. Everybody say that there are no viruses for apple and I was wondering if it makes sense to buy firewall software just in case? Are the Nortons of the world just build up fear?
