Penn State University is home to the largest meteorology program in the nation. It's something they are proud of. They are also home to Professor Michael Mann, who was exposed for 'tricking data' in CRU documents recently released in what is now known as Climategate. Mann is responsible for developing the famous hockey stick diagram of historical global temperatures used in Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth. This was designed to highlight abrupt warming in the past century that looks like a hockey stick on a timeline. We now know that to not be true... The trick, unfortunately made some aspects of past climate hide extremes to exaggerate any warming in recent years. Here is the e-mail that was sent from Phil Jones at CRU to the authors of the hockey stick. In it, credit is given to Mike for his 'trick' to manipulate data:
From: Phil Jones To: ray bradley ,mann@xxxxx.xxx, mhughes@xxxx.xxx Subject: Diagram for WMO Statement Date: Tue, 16 Nov 1999 13:31:15 +0000 Cc: k.briffa@xxx.xx.xx,t.osborn@xxxx.xxxDear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,
Once Tim's got a diagram here we'll send that either later today or
first thing tomorrow.
I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps
to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from
1961 for Keith's to hide the decline. Mike's series got the annual
land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land
N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999
for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with
data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.
Thanks for the comments, Ray.Cheers

Penn State has been overwhelmed with the response from the scientific community. It was left with no other option but investigate. The official Penn State statement:
University Reviewing Recent Reports on Climate Information
Professor Michael Mann is a highly regarded member of the Penn State faculty conducting research on climate change. Professor Mann's research papers have been published in well respected peer-reviewed scientific journals. In November 2005, Representative Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) requested that the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) convene a panel of independent experts to investigate Professor Mann's seminal 1999 reconstruction of the global surface temperature over the past 1,000 years. The resulting 2006 report of the NAS panel (http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=11676) concluded that Mann's results were sound and has been subsequently supported by an array of evidence that includes additional large-scale surface temperature reconstructions.
In recent days a lengthy file of emails has been made public. Some of the questions raised through those emails may have been addressed already by the NAS investigation but others may not have been considered. The University is looking into this matter further, following a well defined policy used in such cases. No public discussion of the matter will occur while the University is reviewing the concerns that have been raised.
My question: What does this say for the integrity of their entire department? It is hard to imagine that Mann was the only person involved in manipulating the data at Penn State. What other faculty, and perhaps even grad students were part of the scheme?

The "Trick" in question is a tool known to modelers as "Truthing" or applying a correction factor to modeled data using real measured data. The term "Trick" in the email is regretable. The trends are still valid and the near-consensus of climatologists, ecologists, oceanographers, atmospheric physicists, and many other disciplines is unswayed.
Sir, could you help me with the scientific term or tool used by modelers as it would apply to the remainder of the sentence you reference above? I'm going to assume you will inform me there is a component to 'modeling' and 'truthing' that will explain "from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline". I took a few science classes in college and don't recall 'hiding' being part of lessons or experiments.
Good news. Phil Jones has agreed to step down!
Good news. Phil Jones has agreed to step down!
Let's not forget it doesn't even matter fake data or not. Even if the earth is warming, they have no right to take away our freedoms and our money just for some ridiculously small temperature "benefit". They say the Cap and Trade bill's temperature impact would be so small, it would be impossible detect.
New phrase in liberal scientific lexicon - "Hide the decline"
The "trick" was in only one of many other incriminating emails.
Damm Elmer - you're like the Drudge Report of ClimateGate ! Keep up the good work ! I may need your services for our fight in California trying to eliminate the fraud agency CARB. I hope the diesel regulations here don't spred to the other states -www.killcarb.org

Thanks man, yeah its my 15 minutes of fame I guess. on the CARB thin, watch whats happening in Australia. They are starting to overturn their global warming laws they are even starting an anti-global warming party.
All the "tricks" to support a "global warming" scam have now been exposed. It is an "Inconvenient Truth" that all of you "Global Warming" proponents have been bull shitting us all along. So you must now "Hide the Decline" that the globe has actually COOLED since 1998.
The debate is over... before it even began. You are all a bunch of bull shitting scamsters helping Al Gore and his partners at Kliner Perkins who expected to make a fortune on Cap & Trade legislation.
Remember, always FOLLOW THE MONEY!!!
About the word "trick". There is a lot of prattle of this being a legitimate way of dealing with the data. This is nonsense. You do not use one set of records (tree ring surveys), and then change data sets (thermometer readins) because they disagree with the tree rings. They should have stuck with the tree rings only, or applied the correction to the older data from the so called divergence. They changed data sets to "hide the decline", which their report did very well. Climategate has exposed how we have been lied to all along.
Taking the indirect shot at the PSU Meteo Department is ridiculous. He is one person in the department that spans tons of different subjects in the field of atmospheric science. Not only that but he only started in the Department in 2005. The main email everyone is going nuts about was written 6 years prior. I'm not saying I agree with one side or the other but going crazy over a word or two in a couple out of thousands of emails is ridiculous. Questioning the integrity of the PSU Meteo Department is even more ridiculous and just shows how narrow minded EACH SIDE is in all of this...
I disagree, it is what those two words IMPLY! This email is like pouring gas on a fire, and it makes you wonder what these guys are up to.
What you just said proves my point... Those two words merely IMPLY. And those emails were cherry picked. If this was such a big conspiracy, you would think that there would be more emails out there explaining more 'tricks.' If anything, I'd be more shocked that is all that was said. If those are the only two emails out of thousands that these guys wrote in correspondence that show any hint of wrongdoing, then why is everyone trying to discredit a whole line of though with it? There would have surely been more damning emails were this a major issue. And don't say they deleted them because they obviously weren't smart enough to even delete the email about deleting emails.
Richard Alley shows up a lot in these e-mails. Also a penn stater (unfortunately). He is described by brit geophysicist Gerry Clarke as someone who has "found a way to balance his passion for discovery with his duty to inform non-scientists of the crises that are looming". Let's hope this 'balance' didn't come at the expense of the truth. Time will tell.
Thanks for posting this. Would be intrested to read more or possibly please contact me by email thank you!
This was awesome
I’ve been looking through the web for my research on this content. I read something about this at the Friendly news mashup Glad i stumbled across this site. Thanks for the share.
Thank you for the info... thanx for your quick answer..., i appreciate that, btw, can i link this tool to my blogs? if you permit it of course.
