A local power company Wright Hennepin doesn't appear to be the happiest since the mandates came out in 2007 to recieve a portion of their power from Windmills. The Blowhards in St. Paul aren't powering it either. They've provided some quickfacts about it here:
Quick facts about WH's on-site wind generator
Height upon completion: 120 feet
Manufacturer: Jacobs Wind Energy Systems
Model: 31-20 wind turbine
Peak power rating: 20 KW (enough power for about 3 homes[thats pushing it] )
Peak output speed: 25.5 miles per hour
Construction completion date: Dec. 17, 2007
Now in the hopes to make a relevant point their tracking the power or their so called windmill(s) online. A play by play with: Realtime Generation, Realtime Utilization, kwh Month to Date, kwh Year to Date, Wind Direction, Temperature, Last Update, plus informational tracking graphs of wind history. So far to date its generated: 3,524 Kwh this year. The current reading is 0.83 kw @ 2mph which it seems to level off at 5 kwh @ about 10 mph. Which it achieved for about 5 hours today. see it for yourself right here.
Now this is hardly a long term statistic but it really deflates the idea that people will be able to run very many things off of 5kwh. According to the Environmentalists at gardenpunks 5 kwh challenge, they managed to reduce a SINGLE HOME from 35 kwh/day down to 10 kwh over the last 4 years worth of changes. So in order to reach their goal of 5 kwh per day to be powered by lets say 1 windmill they plan the following:
Fortunately, there are still a number of things we plan on doing to hit this goal.
- Stop using the clothes dryer, and instead line-dry our clothes/towels.(that ought to be fun in January)
- Use the air-dry setting on the dishwasher instead of heat dry.
- Replace the remainder of our lights with either CFLs or LEDs. Our kitchen lighting setup consists of eight 50W MR-16s in a couple of fixtures, which we need to replace since this is one of our most commonly used sources of light. Also, we need to replace our bathroom lights, which consist of six 40W bulbs.
